let's go back... let's go back to when I was about 6-8 years old, couldn't sleep in past 7:30 (hmm... that's starting to happen again) and would sit my ass in front of the 3 channels of Saturday Morning TV available until noon (none of this 24 hour cartoon assault that kid's have now!). OK, grab your bowl of Alpha-bits (sorry, that's as junky as my mom would let me get, no Fruit Loops or Lucky Charms here)and let's get watching.
My absolute favourite, the one I looked forward to ALL week was this:
This shit scared the crap out of me but I wanted to live in their cave and the giant fruits and vegetables they collected were crazy cool. Ha, I love how the son just goes by his first name, "Wesley", I wonder what ever happened to that egomaniac? I bet there's a Tiger Beat or two out there with him on the cover. I'll have to look into that. Anyway, I have lived a life forever changed by Sleestak.
Another show I liked:
It kind of bothered me that the Gorilla and I shared a name though. I suppose kids would never accept the low budget effects of this program these days. I don't think it ever really registered that the one guy was a midget. (That's not PC I know, but it was a fine term back then).
OH, this one was GOOD!
at the time, the whole Bigfoot/Sasquatch thing was really blowing up. I was terrified at the idea of Bigfoot, so of course HAD to watch this show. This show was pretty serious and would sometimes draw you in so much you'd stop shovelling cereal into your yap, it'd get soggy and you'd have to get a new bowl for your next show. Here's another little factoid for ya... Faith No More's track Last Cup of Sorrow has a remix called "the Bigfoot and Wildboy remix".
It just occurred to me looking at these choices... there were A LOT of live action choices back then!
As far as cartoons, I'd say the two I liked the most were:
(strange, I might have to change this choice as I don't have anything in particular to say about Hong King Phooey other than I watched it. Maybe it really wasn't a favourite and it just came on between other shows I DID like?) It could be the theme song that caught me.
and
The Shmoo? Does anyone besides me remember this thing? Shmoo became my best friend's nickname, poor thing. It's an annoying little fucker now that I look back, isn't it! God the 70's were just awesome. If you were a kid anyway. I hear it maybe wasn't so great for the adults. Unless you like cocaine, fuel shortages and bad fashion design. OH, and the cars were pretty boss come to think of it...
Next time, I'll rundown the most awesome prime time Television shows from when I was a kid, just because I love you!
7 dirty hippies blowing your mind:
Debbie Green did an amazing Shmoo immitation ... "Shmoooooooooey!!" ... i used to love to get her to do it. You made me laugh about the soggy cereal you forgot to eat because Wonder Buggy somehow managed to save the day again. heh heh.
Ha, I don't think I ever heard that imitation but I'd like to! Wonder Buggy! I forgot about that ridiculous thing! I have a couple of VHS tapes of Krofft TV show episodes at home, that's one of them! There was also Speed Buggy, remember that? Kind of a Scooby Doo in a dune buggy rip-off.
Land of the Lost was the BEST growing up... then Will Farrell had to come and fuck it up. Like he does.
I was SO against that Land of the Lost movie remake. But... I didn't hate it. Mostly because I didn't accept it as really having anything to do with the TV show.
wasn't Wonder Buggy a dune buggy? there was one where he was kinda like Herbie The Love Bug, all beat up and rusty but then he'd have the ability to transform into a super 70's buggy with a glittery disco finish like a bowling ball!
we grew up about the same time.
Yes Wonderbug could transform from ratty to glittery, that is right! Speedbuggy couldn't do that and therefore was an inferior dune buggy.
