I was just reading about some Taiwanese kid who apparently sang a Whitney Houston song so perfectly it moved some to tears and they are comparing him to that Susan Boyle person and I asked myself "am I the only person in the WORLD who didn't find Susan Boyle's singing all that impressive?"
Honestly, I suppose her voice is fine, I mean I don't listen to theatrical type music, I guess the woman can carry a tune but does it give me goosebumps or stand out as unique? No, not really.
What a funny world we live in that as long as you are basically ugly, your talents will be seen to be greater than they are, like having ANY talents as an ugly person beyond frightening people you come around corners at is a surprise.

6 dirty hippies blowing your mind:
I saw the elephant man tap dance once and it really wasn't THAT impressive.
But everyone was all, "this is the best ever!"
seems to me that reckoning in her physical appearance is a very modern (re: shallow) way of looking at susan boyle -- it's more a reflection of the vapid nature of modern pop culture than it is a statement about whether or not she is talented. i think the wonder with boyle is, simply, that this woman has an incredibly strong singing voice and she was just some lonely old maid singing to herself in her kitchen. everyone loves an underdog story, and she is it. who gives a fuck if she is pretty or ugly or whatever. that has no bearing on it all in my opinion, tho i agree that it does in the greater sense of how she was perceived.
that's what I mean... they weren't even expecting that she could sing based on her appearance and were shocked when she opened her mouth. Having said that, I still think that her talent then has been elevated beyond it's actuality because of her looks. I'm not saying she can't sing, I'm just saying she's not really delivering anything new or unique or especially exciting. Had she been attractive, she would have made it onto the show sure, but none of this fuss would have been made regardless of her age.
i agree with you! i just think it's as much to do with her background and circumstances (lower-middle-class, never been married, blue collar). if it was strictly based on the fact that she was fug looking, i would call that a VICTORY considering the degree to which every single person in front of a camera these days has to be young, thin, and beautiful. as an anomaly, she actually goes against the current of things as they pathetically stand these days.

Susan Boyle's voice is definitely impressive, but just made to seem more than it is based on her appearance (and the lead-up to her singing in which everyone was exceptionally rude to her).
I'm biased in thinking she's good, though, because I admire the hell out of people who can sing at all (I can't).
