another glorious day, summer summer summer and it's not even June, so amazing. I've scaled back my summer vacation plans a bit as money is a little tighter than originally planned (with the going back to school thing), so I've decided to maybe do a week in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park (or maybe Shenandoah? help!) camping. I've driven through several times but never stopped and it just seems so gorgeous!
Has anyone ever done any camping out there? I'd love some inside tips on the best camping for example...I'm thinking later in August.

8 dirty hippies blowing your mind:
I used to live in the Shenandoah Valley and yeah late August is definitely the best time. Bring plenty of bug repelent cause they will be thick then.
wow, that time of the year is humid that far south -- you are one brave lady. be prepared for that! that said, one of the most beautiful areas of the south eastern US ... you must drive the Blue Ridge! encroiable!
Oh yes I have driven through there before, actually this would be my 4th time! It is amazing isn't it, this time I want to actually spend more than a few hours there!
I'm ok with humidity, I've never travelled off this continent but have travelled in that part of the U.S. several times at that time of year!
heh, well you know how i am -- me and humidity have a troubled past.
but yeah, that is a GORGEOUS part of the US. the mountains are beautiful. i remember being in the backseat as a kid and literally just sitting with my face pressed against the window in awe. we never stopped or stayed there either, i've always wanted to take Jan. i love the mountains.
which is why we're doing the Adirondacks and the Green Mountains this summer. closer to home, and not so far south as to be so muggy. Vermont was another place i have driven through several times and always vowed to come back and stay for a spell and finally this summer i am making good on that promise to myself.
super excited about being in the mountains!
me too, I hope I can get this organized! Yes, you and humidity I figured not exactly the best of friends!
I've been to Vermont and Maine etc. but it's been years and years since I've done anything more than drive through on my way out east. I remember them being very nice though, my family used to camp there when we lived in Quebec.
i think a big goal for me will be to one day go to Montana and Wyoming and Idaho and see the mountains there. i know that they are the same as north in Alberta and i have been there but there is something very romanticized about that part of the US, i dunno what it is. probably from reading Last Of The Mohicans and A River Runs Through It.
i think a big trip that isn't far off is California, and i want to have three weeks and ten grand to do it. maybe when jan and i celebrate our 20th (only three years away!). oh, and win the lottery.
ha.
yep, western US is my goal too. Was hoping to do that this summer but scaled it back for now. Maybe next year? I absolutely want to do a ghost town/desert/mountain sort of thing out that way...I need a lottery win too. If that happened, my job would become fulfilling all these travel desires!!
Although I think too many folks visit during the peak periods, the Great Smokey Mountains Park can be fun. I particularly like Cades Cove and the backcountry campsites that are on some of the longer trails. A number of old 'hillbilly' type houses survive from the folks that were the last to live in the area.
