Raising Money for a Worthy Cause

so a couple of weeks ago instead of having a Halloween party I had a little Girls night in get-together which, if you don't know, is to raise money for cancer research. The kind people at Matchstick sent me some great items to help make the event a success including a Breakfast at Tiffany's DVD, some amazing Chloe perfume, super delicious tea, a $10 itunes card and some fabulous cupcakes. (OK, I have a sad story about the cupcakes, they arrived completely mangled to bits because of shipping so I just handed them out at work). They were fabulously delicious though and came from here).

They were meant to look like this and had a beautiful turquoise frosting.

I made some fresh cupcakes at home (lemon, YUM!) so all was not lost in the sweet tooth department.

Originally there was supposed to be six of us; we ended up being 3, losing two to illness and one to work. No worries, we still had a good time and raised a little bit of cash between the three of us.

So each of us brought a little something to eat to the party (my contribution was the lemon cupcakes of course!) including homemade vegetarian chili and bread and an amazing salad with walnuts, pears and gorgonzola. Oh and wine, LOTS of wine!

Do you know, I've never watched Breakfast at Tiffany's all the way through before, so it was a bit of a treat to hang out and see it; I love old movies and this one didn't disappoint! You've gotta love Audrey Hepburn!

Naturally as the evening progressed and the wine was drunk things got a little livelier; you know, three people can sure sound like 6 or even 10 under the right circumstances!

I gave the girls each one of the little Chloe perfume bottles before they left, it smells really pretty by the way, I've never tried it before. We also played a round of Wii bowling; winner got the itunes card (J got that one).

So, although we were a smaller group than I had planned and I had to make a quick decision about the dessert, we had a good time hanging out and directed the money we would have spent going out towards charity.

By the way, just because October is over doesn't mean you can't still contribute to the cause, check out my page here, any amount is perfect! By the way, this may have been a Girl's Night In but we can't forget the guys. You can also make a donation to my Movember page right here.

I think if I do this again I will definitely set something up at a venue and make it a bigger event for sure.

Can you guys take a quick look at this survey?  If you fill it out, they will donate $2 to the Cancer society. It won't take you long! Survey is here.

I want to make a little disclaimer here for those of you who don't know me. I would have participated in this even if I hadn't received the items from Matchstick; I am a person who definitely gets involved in issues/causes that matter to me. I know a lot of people do things just to get freebies, so I wanted to make it clear that that isn't the case, I'm a big girl, I can buy my own things!!!

what is this Matchstick? I keep seeing all these really badly written "reviews" about cougar boots that the writers supposedly got from this matchstick place and i cant figure out why they would give some of these people freebies when they cant even string a sentence together to write about them. What a joke, obviously most of these "influential" bloggers just want free stuff so they write some lame entry and throw up a few photos and voila!

Well, I can't speak for the Cougar boots promo as I'm not part of it.

THIS one though, was pretty worthwhile, don't you think?

yes, very nice of you to do I guess, but you DID get something out of it, right? You got free stuff. Who wouldn't do things for free stuff?

umm, you'd have to be pretty desperate to put together a fund-raiser party, set-up the online donation pages, DONATE money yourself and then write about it and promote it, all for a free DVD, $10 itunes card (that I GAVE AWAY), some perfume samples (that I ALSO gave away) and cupcakes. Geez, don't be such a pessimist. It would take more than that to get me to do something I didn't actually want to do. I'm not that easily bought.

In addition and separate from this, I set up a Movember page, am collecting money for that online and made a Movember donation to a friend's Movember efforts. I haven't been "rewarded" for doing this with any sort of gifting, and that's not the point.

What have you done? OR do YOU only do things in exchange for gifts?

Outside of all this, I personally donate my time and energy to quite a number of environmental projects. I take offense at someone implying I have done something in exchange for a few little freebies. Think before you speak, you don't know me at all.

some people are so negative, I can't believe it sometimes. This sounds like a wonderful idea and I don't know why anybody would say anything against it.

Good for you for doing this and don't worry about the ignorants that are all over the net trying to knock people down.

thanks Marisol, I agree with you!

The internet can be good for so many things but it also seems to bring out the worst in some people doesn't it.

Your name is pretty!

I think this was great! I would totally do something like this, my aunt had breast cancer so it touches close to home!
